What Is a Dental Crown?
A crown is a cover that is placed on a tooth to address issues with its appearance and/or function. Because it completely covers a tooth, it is also commonly called a “cap.” A crown restores a tooth to its normal shape, size, and function.
Uses of a Dental Crown
Crowns can be placed for a variety of reasons, such as:
- Treating a cavity that is too large for a filling
- Restoring a tooth that is cracked, worn down or otherwise weakened
- Covering a tooth that has received a root canal treatment
- Covering a discolored or misshapen tooth
Placing a Crown
Dental crowns can be made from several types of materials, including metal alloys, ceramics, porcelain fused to metal, or composite resin. Your dentist at Timeless Dental will choose the best material to suit the purpose of the crown, depending on where it will be in your mouth.
It will take one dental visit to have a crown placed. During your visit, the tooth will be prepared to receive the crown. Your dentist will remove a small portion of the enamel to make room for the crown to fit. Any decay will also be removed, and the tooth will be cleaned. Your dentist will place the permanent crown on the tooth to check the fit and make any necessary adjustments before cementing it into place.
If you are considering having a dental crown placed to restore your tooth or to make cosmetic improvements to it, please contact Dr. John Rodriquez and his team to assist you.
